Day Program Sod Turning

September 22 was an exciting day for the individuals, Board of Directors, Building Committee and staff of West Central Abilities! After many years of dreaming, planning, fundraising and so much more we had our official sod turning!

West Central Abilities was honoured to have Ken Francis, MLA for Kindersley, Mayor Rod Perkins of the town of Kindersley, Councillor Lorne Pincemin from the R.M. of Kindersley and Lloyd Griffith, Vice Chair of the WCA Board of Directors attend our sod turning and speak to those who were able to gather for the event. It was a privilege to share this day with other special guests including clients of WCA and their families, the Board of Directors, past and present, dedicated staff of WCA, CLSD representative Helen Loran, Don Epp from SARC, Contractor Mark Kolla of KBI Contracting and many other citizens.

A new day program building in Kindersley will mean that programs are offered in the community where individuals are able to safely and easily access downtown businesses, services and supports. Those who choose to walk to work can do so without the worry of crossing a busy highway. The new location has been planned to meet the needs of individuals now and into the future with ceiling track lift systems to allow individuals to safely move out of wheelchairs for exercise, relaxation and personal care. There will be specific spaces dedicated to meet the needs of individuals who require both a reduction or an increase of sensory stimuli to allow them to self-regulate their emotions and actions. Our vision for this new program building is one where our community gathers to learn, celebrate, build relationships and share knowledge and experiences with members of our community.

The individuals, staff, Board of Directors, families and many more people who are involved in this project are extremely pleased to see it moving forward. Almost daily, people are asking questions about the new building and asking to drive past and see the work that has been done so far. Our agency is proud to be bringing this up to date facility to our community and we look forward to inviting the community in, once it is complete. Many thanks to everyone who has helped to make the dream of a new program building in the heart of our community a reality!

We also wish to extend our gratitude to Kindersley Buy-Low Foods and Kindersley McDonald’s for donating cookies and coffee for this event.
